In 1948, Nina went to Leeds University to study Modern Languages (German and Spanish). To be able to go to university, you had to build up points and honours. At that time, after the war, there were a lot of ex-service people who went. Nina said that it was such an interesting time due to the mix of people.

Whilst at university, Nina also enjoyed participating in athletics. It was the only sporting club to travel together with the men to events. There were other activities that students could get involved in, such as the end of term celebrations. One year, Nina recalls the dental students dressing up in roman costumes, making chariots and racing around City Square. She herself dressed up in a pixie costume – very daring! However, it wasn’t just for the students to enjoy themselves; it was a way of raising a lot of money.

Nina remembers using clothing coupons at the time. She would get a pattern and make a dress from material remnants (a yard and a half of material not sufficient to sell and that would costs very few or no coupons). She was pleased with it as it was made from a pretty blue material and didn’t look really old.
