The Sporting Heroes project team went along to interview the Rhinos fans at their last home game of the 2010 season. Stephen Silver was one of the supporters who we spoke to.

What’s your name?

Stephen Silver.

And you’ve been a Rhinos fan for how long?

Since about 1949.

What’s your favourite game of all time?

I would say one of the best was the ’99 Cup Final, Leeds versus Broncos. Prior to that, the 1978 Cup Final between St Helens and Leeds at Wembley. That was brilliant. That was one of the best.

What’s your overriding memory of that?

I can’t remember but it was a great win ‘cause we were behind up to half time. We came from behind to win it and it was a Syd Hynes game. I would have said that was a Syd Hynes match and he won it. A brilliant game. That would be my favourite.

Who’s your favourite player of all time?

Lewis Jones.

Why?

Great standoff, great centre. Read the game brilliantly. Great goal kicker. Next to him would be Syd Hynes but there’s been some great players at Leeds. That’s about it.

What’s it like to be a Leeds Rhinos fan?

Do I need to answer that? ‘Cause they are the greatest rugby league team in this country. You can forget Wigan and St Helens. We’ve been up/down financially. We’ve maintained the standard that all the other clubs have got to achieve. They can never achieve what we’ve achieved in the last 5 years. We’ve maintained a standard. It’s up to them to come to our standard and not for us to come down.

What does it mean to you?

Exactly what I’ve just said.
