There is no doubt that there is a lot of risk involved for stock car racing drivers. However, the BriSCA governing body does what it can to look after its drivers.

Extracts taken from interview with Phillip Walker, June 2011:

It tended to be [dangerous] but obviously it has to have a governing body to make rules and regulations apply and licenses. It was dangerous. It’s still dangerous today but with the Health and Safety Executive being involved with it and other people, big organisations, it is safer than what it was then. It’s faster now because obviously technology’s moved further forward. There’s still quite a risk in it.

Yes, over the years, I’ve seen some bad roll-overs; a couple of drivers get seriously hurt. But the BSCDA and BriSCA have what they call a ben fund association. Now, the ben fund, if one of the drivers gets hurt and has to have time off work, whatever’s in the ben fund kitty, it pays for them to get better and get back into work and get back into racing. That’s a trophy what’s raced for one a year at different tracks over the country.
