Phillip Walker is a stock car enthusiast, who has been hooked on the sport since going to see his first race in the 1970s.

Extracts taken from interview with Phillip Walker, June 2011:

The first time I went was in 1978 with a friend from work. He took me in 1978 up to Bradford. It were Friday night when they were racing on a Friday night. That was when the Daily Mirror newspaper sponsored the meetings up there, you know, with the big back-up they had in the papers. Me and my friends, we used to stand on what they call the ‘Bradford Bend’, which was the Richard Dunn end, where the Richard Dunn sports stadium is.

I support Frankie Wainman Junior. His father raced in the 70s and 80s but he’s obviously retired now. I follow this Frankie Wainman Junior, racing number 515. He’s been world champion. He’s been national points champion. He’s even won the 240 cubic inch in New Zealand. He’s won a few times over in New Zealand when he’s travelled down there him and his family. Before that, I used to follow Stuart Smith.

I’ve been collecting since the first time I went in 1978 at Odsal. I’ve got a lot of programmes back to the ‘60s – well, from the ‘60s up to present day – and the stock car magazine what I get monthly, I subscribe to that. Then I’ve got annuals, newspapers, hardback books on the sport, videos, CDs, models, framed photos, a couple of trophies what I’ve had – well, I’ve been given. It’s something what I know quite a bit but I don’t know as much as what a lot of people know, people who’ve been going longer than me.

I just love the sport. With it being a family sport, people take their children, their grandparents and it’s just a very fast, colourful sport. Over a short oval – a shale track or a tarmac track – it is the fastest thing you will ever get.

It’s like any sport really. If people follow rugby, cricket, greyhound racing, football. I have been to the football but I prefer the stock car. It’s a family-run sport as well. I’ve seen the fathers win the world championships. Now it’s the second generation, seeing their sons win the world championships and hopefully I’ll be able probably to see the third generation, their family, win the world championships over the coming years.
