Eesti Kodu Club, Bradford

28. 11. 1947 in Holmfirth in Wash-Pit mill canteen, a mixed voice choir was organised by Mrs Tamara Taimsaar and Mr Ernest Luuk named KUNGLA.

From 1947 small groups of Estonians were employed in Huddersfield, Holmfirth and Bradford area in mills.

Under the War Charities Act, permission was granted in 1944, to establish the Estonian Relief Committee.

The Eesti Kodu Club ran a school to support the young people in the Estonian community and help keep the language and culture alive.

The Bradford Estonian Theatre Group started in 1950. There were 20 members on average, and they rehearsed and performed plays to the public.

The kannel is the Estonian name for the kantele, which is a traditional Finnish plaucked string instrument.

The National Dance Group KALEV started in 26. 10. 1962 to teach and practice national dances and to entertain. Dancers are between eight to twelve pairs.

By the end of 1960 there were already many Estonians of pensionable age living in Bradford and surrounding towns.

The Association of Estonians in Great Britain was founded in 1947 to serve the interest of Estonians in Great Britain.
